Resource Blog #1

This Ted Talk by Alvin Irby explains the importance of having students identify themselves as "a reader." This talk focuses on the illiteracy of black boys and how as educators it is important to be culturally competent when introducing reading. As educators in any content area, it is important to know our students and cater to their specific needs. This TedTalk relates to this course because along with showing students the importance of reading, it is important to show them how it relates to all content areas. The ways in which we as educators go about teaching students to read can make a world of difference in their education experience.

  1. I love that you not only related the importance of reading per content area, but also included a resource that discusses the importance of reading strategies per student based off of their culture and specific need. This Ted Talk was specifically for black boys, but you can relate reading needs to every culture and background. The literacy-content area is about reading strategies, and so although this resource is super incredible I think maybe elaborating more in your paragraph about the specific strategies or whatever the literacy-content is for each week we do a synthesis blog just like how he talked about today in class on elaborating more.
